Rostrevor Mountain Bike Trails are set to host the Irish National Mountain Bike Marathon Championships on 14th September 2014.

Organisers Summit Mountain Biking and Cycling Ireland Off Road Commission have successfully attracted this prestigious event to Northern Ireland for the first time.

The event which is sponsored by Newry based bike shop, Green Bikes will be based in Kilbroney Park and the main race will cover a gruelling 70km with an elevation gain of 2000 metres across a mixture of purpose built trails, natural forest singletrack and open mountain trails.

The course has been designed by Summit Mountain Biking’s Ciara MacManus, 2011 Irish National Mountain Bike Marathon Champion, Irish Cross Country Mountain Bike Champion 2013 & 2014. Glengormley based MacManus has used her extensive experience of racing at international level in Europe and America to put together a challenging but fully rewarding championship race.

Ciara is thrilled at the prospect of holding the race at such a great venue as it offers the opportunity to highlight the quality of mountain bike riding in the area as well as showcasing the spectacular mountain landscape.

“I have raced in some of the best marathon/stages races in the world including the 6 Day Breck Epic in the Colorado Rockies and Garda Bike Marathon in Italy, a 98km race with over 3000m of climbing and I believe that the trails and terrain around Rostrevor have as much to offer to riders as any of these other locations making the course truly worthy of championship status”

Councillor Daire Hughes, Mayor of Newry & Mourne District Council, expressed his delight at such a prestigious event being held in Rostrevor.  “The championships are another great feather in the cap for the Rostrevor Mountain Bike Trails; it will be great to see competitors from all over Ireland congregating in Rostrevor to battle it out for the National Champion’s Rainbow Jersey”

There is also an “Expert” open category for non-racers who would like to experience the challenge of taking on the championship course while there is a shorter support race consisting of a 24km lap of the trail centre’s Red Trail.

“Congratulations to Summit Mountain Biking for securing the event for Rostrevor, the course sounds very challenging and I’m sure some local riders will be keen to flex their muscles against visiting competitors” added Chris Scott, MountainBikeNI.com
