Public Consultation: Gortin Glen Forest Park

Mountain bikers across the country are invited to a public consultation at 6PM on Tuesday 21st April 2015 to discuss the proposed development of recreation facilities within Gortin Glen Forest Park, County Tyrone.

At this public consultation, facilitated by Outdoor Recreation NI on behalf of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, trail designers, Architrail, will outline initial concept plans for the development of walking and mountain biking trails within the Forest Park which will then be used to generate further discussion and feedback from members of the public.

Outdoor Recreation NI’s Product Development Manager, Clare Jones, explains “This open meeting will provide a unique opportunity for members of the public to have their say regarding the future development of this stunning Forest Park.”

Mrs Jones continues, “Without question Gortin Glen Forest Park holds incredible tourism potential however we believe passionately that any new developments must also meet the wants and needs of the local community. This is the time for people to share their opinions with us and so we would encourage members of the local community to join us at this consultation later this month.”

This public meeting will be held in the Gortin Accommodation and Activity Centre, Gortin Village, on Tuesday 21st April and will be split into two sessions.

The first session, held from 6pm to 7:30pm, will focus on the development of mountain biking trails within Gortin Glen Forest Park. The second session, from 7:30pm to 9pm, will then be used to discuss the proposed walking trails as well as the wider development of visitor facilities within the Forest Park.

Over the past two months, Architrail has conducted numerous site visits and has consulted with landowners and other recognised stakeholders. Outdoor Recreation NI also released two online surveys, completed by over one thousand people, seeking preferences from interested walkers and mountain bikers across Northern Ireland.

Combined with feedback from these two public consultations, Architrail will deliver a ‘Macro Design’ by the end of May 2015 which will outline potential trail corridors within the Forest Park and will provide an indicatory cost for the development of these proposed recreation facilities. This design will then guide funding applications for capital trail build moving forward.
