'IN THE RED' Mountain Bike Sportive, Rostrevor

As part of the NI Festival of Cycling 3rd - 19th June 2016, Newry, Mourne and Down District Council in association with 26 Extreme present a new Mountain Bike event 'IN THE RED' for the Rostrevor Trails, which will take place on 12th June.

The event encompasses the entire “Red Loop” of Rostrevor Mountain Bike Trails, and will be 29km in length from start to finish. While many of us have ridden the red loop, many of us haven’t had the experience of riding it “Sportive Style”.  A cyclosportive, or often simply sportive, is a short to long distance, organised, mass-participation cycling event, typically held annually.

Often, they are organised along popular cycling routes, and are extremely popular among road cyclists. With a mass start, water and aid stops, mechanical services, and marshal support, as well as chipped timing, a medal and a bespoke event t-shirt, this is definitely not like riding the red loop, by yourself, on any other day.

On the 12th June a range of activities will be on offer throughout Kilbroney Park, such as bike safety workshops, kids trails and health and safety bike awareness sessions.

Michael Ruane said ‘Newry, Mourne and Down District Council are excited to be working with 26Extreme and Tourism NI during the NI Festival of Cycling.  I’m sure this will be a fantastic mountain bike event and with all the other activities on offer – it will be a great day out for all the family’.

For those who want to prove their prowess on the red loop, there is the option to aim for riding the entire loop in under 1hr 30 minutes. Riders who achieve this will have their official red loop time online for everyone to see, and will receive a commemorative T-shirt.
