When local WideOpenMag Team rider Kelan Grant invited one of Ireland’s most up and coming mountain biker racers, Killian Callaghan, to try the trails in Northern Ireland, we thought we’d send along a camera to see how they got on!
Beginning at Davagh Forest Mountain Bike Trails in Co. Tyrone, the guys spent a full day enjoying the trail centre’s variety of singletrack, berms and rock drops before racing each other down the Stream Trail and giving Eagle’s Rock a few goes. Finishing at Davagh, they went on to “The Shepherd’s Rest” nearby for a well-deserved pint by the fire, before continuing their way on to the two trail centres in the Mournes.
After staying at the Kilmorey Arms Hotel in Kilkeel (which is currently offering mountain bikers a 15% discount when booking with the discount code “RideNorth”) they began the second day of their trip at Rostrevor Mountain Bike Trails. Kelan explained that “Killian is a man with bags of style, so I was really looking forward to getting him up here.”
The Vitus Factory rider and winner of last year’s Under 21 category at the Enduro World Series in Wicklow, said that there aren’t many places like Rostrevor in Ireland.
Riding some of the 27km of XC trails at Rostrevor was followed up immediately by multiple turns on ‘Mega Mission’ and ‘On The Pulse’, enjoying rapid descents of the trails and enjoying the incredible views of the Mournes that are on offer at this trail centre.
Their final trip was to the trails at Castlewellan. Surrounded by more epic scenery in the form of a crystal blue lake and 19th century castle, Killian and Kelan spent some time on the pump track before heading onto Castlewellan’s 19km of red trail. There they set to enjoying the quick flow of the singletrack and indulging in some ‘Elbows Out’ style racing down Slievenaslat, before Killian made the short return trip back to Dublin.
