MTB Mournes: Important Notice

The Mournes mountain bike trails are now well under construction and are due to be launched in early 2013.

Outdoor Recreation NI (formerly CAAN) has been working on this project for the last 10 years and now with all the funding, approvals and paperwork in place, the Mournes is set to become one of the top mountain bike destinations in the UK and Ireland.

As many will know, it has taken a huge amount of effort from a range of partners to get to this stage.

This is an official request to please be patient and not ride the trails until they are officially open.

You may think you are doing no harm, but riding the trails before they are officially opened is a big issue.

The trails are currently part of a construction site and if there is an incident it could stop this trails project in its tracks.

It is also slowing down construction work as barriers have to be checked, replaced and recorded regularly.  The trail builders would prefer to be building the trails than checking barriers!  People are also removing barriers at start of sections and throwing them into the woods. Again this is simply out of order and is time consuming to put these back in place.

It has taken 10 years to get to where we are and it would be ironic if it is the mountain bikers themselves who delay or stop this project.

Please, please be patient…

Construction will be ongoing at Rostrevor between April 2012 and January 2013 and at Castlewellan Forest between September 2012 and April 2013.

Pass this message on, and help us get the trails on the ground and ready to ride as soon as possible. For more information contact Chris Armstrong on c.armstrong@outdoorrecreationni.com
