Are e-bikes the new normal?

A Conversation in Plumbridge
I was in a shop outside Plumbridge when I got chatting to two mountain bikers who had just been to Davagh Forest trails. They were your ‘typical’ riders – in their mid 40s, looking for XC riding for a bit of craic. What prompted this blog was the fact that they had both been riding e-bikes.
“Aw, couldn’t be without them!” Was the refrain. One had given his 12 year old daughter his £3,000+ hardtail, and was himself riding a German e-bike that cost circa £500. His friend had an even cheaper one.

The cycling world is evolving rapidly – as shown by that exchange – and the number one most significant shifts in recent years has been the rise of e-mountain bikes (e-MTBs). Once a niche product, these electrically assisted mountain bikes have surged in popularity, leading many to wonder: Are e-mountain bikes the new normal? Let’s explore why e-MTBs are becoming a staple in the cycling community.
The Rise of E-Mountain Bikes
E-mountain bikes have seen an explosion in popularity due to advancements in technology, reduction of cost and a growing demand for more accessible outdoor activities. These bikes combine the thrill of traditional mountain biking with the ease of an electric motor, making it possible for riders of all skill levels to tackle challenging terrain.

According to industry reports, the global e-bike market is expected to grow significantly in the coming years, with e-MTBs being a key driver of this trend. The appeal is clear: e-MTBs offer a way to enjoy the great outdoors with less physical strain, allowing more people to experience the joy of mountain biking.
A MTBNI Poll
We did our own poll, to determine where our followers sit on the issue.

So 72% of the mountain bikers in Northern Ireland, in theory, will be at least occasionally riding e-bikes in the next year. That’s a breathtakingly large jump from just a few years ago, when they were considered a niche, or an assist for injured or older riders.
Why E-MTBs Are Becoming the Norm
Accessibility for All Riders: There’s no doubt that traditional mountain biking can be difficult for anyone with physical limitations. E-MTBs level the playing field, providing assistance that can be adjusted to match the rider’s ability. This makes mountain biking accessible to a wider audience, including older adults and those recovering from injuries.
Extended Ride Potential: One of the biggest advantages of e-MTBs is the ability to go farther and faster with less effort. Riders can explore longer trails and tackle steeper climbs without worrying about fatigue. This opens up new possibilities for adventure and exploration, making mountain biking more appealing to a broader range of people.
The changing landscape of mountain-biking: Mountain biking has always been a sport of diverse disciplines, catering to different types of riders and terrains. Barnett’s Demesne near Belfast is another excellent example, with its urban location providing a balance of XC trails and a dedicated jump park, making it a versatile spot for all types of riders. However, in recent years, there has been a noticeable shift towards gravity or bike park riding, which emphasizes downhill speed, technical skills, and adrenaline-pumping descents, Rostrevor is particularly known for its demanding downhill trails, with stunning views over Carlingford Lough, making it a favorite for gravity riders.. The rise of the e-bike has provided a battery powered shuttle for many of these gravity style riders.
Sustainability and Eco-Friendliness: E-MTBs offer an environmentally friendly alternative to motorized vehicles like dirt bikes and ATVs. They produce zero emissions and have a lower impact on trails, making them a sustainable choice for outdoor enthusiasts who want to minimize their carbon footprint.
Technological Advancements: The technology behind e-MTBs has improved dramatically, with more efficient motors, longer-lasting batteries, and lighter frames. These advancements have made e-MTBs more reliable and user-friendly, further driving their popularity.
Changing Perceptions: Initially, e-MTBs faced some resistance from traditional mountain bikers, who viewed them as “cheating.” However, as more people experience the benefits firsthand, perceptions are changing. Many now see e-MTBs as a complement to traditional bikes, offering a different but equally rewarding experience.

The Future of E-Mountain Biking
As e-MTBs continue to grow in popularity, we can expect to see further innovations in design, performance, and affordability. Bike manufacturers are investing heavily in e-MTB technology, which will likely lead to more advanced features and options for riders.
Moreover, as the e-MTB community grows, so too will the infrastructure to support it. More trails are being adapted or built to accommodate e-bikes, and regulations are evolving to integrate them into existing outdoor recreation areas.
E-mountain bikes are not just a passing trend; they are becoming a permanent fixture in the cycling world. By making mountain biking more accessible, sustainable, and enjoyable for a wider range of people, e-MTBs are redefining what it means to hit the trails. Whether you’re a seasoned rider looking for a new challenge or a newcomer eager to explore the outdoors, e-MTBs offer an exciting and inclusive way to experience mountain biking. As technology continues to improve and perceptions shift, it seems likely that e-mountain bikes will indeed become the new normal.
